Mounting for Quantum Cascade Lasers BOZEMAN, Mont., Sept. 14, 2009 – ILX Lightwave Corp. has announced the release of the LDM-4872 quantum cascade laser mount with case temperature control. It offers a wide temperature control range and an optional XYZ stage with multiple mid-IR lens options.
The mounting supports C-Block, Alpes ST and NS chip-on-carrier packages, as well as customer proprietary quantum cascade laser packages. An integral thermoelectric module and a high-performance 120-W water-cooled cold plate provide an active temperature control range of -30 to 30 °C with heat loads of up to 10 W. The design of the XYZ stage ensures precise adjustment while maintaining a vacuum or nitrogen-purged environment.
Fixture design and precision machining result in low and repeatable thermal resistance between the laser and the mount, minimizing the temperature difference between the two. Optical table mounting is made possible through standard 1-in. spaced mounting holes on the base of the mount.
For quantum cascade lasers that do not require collimation, a mid-IR window is available.
The XYZ stage provides precise adjustment even when the mounting is under vacuum. Precision differential adjustment screws for the X- and Y-axes provide 25 μm per revolution fine adjustment. The knurled lens cartridge has 64 threads per inch for precise Z adjustment. Four standard aspheric 6.5-mm lens options are available to cover a wide wavelength range.
The mounting has been optimized for research and development applications of quantum cascade lasers and is compatible with the company’s LDX-3232 high-compliance voltage laser diode driver and temperature controllers through standard interconnect cables.
