SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 17, 2009 – Two new bioinstrumentation lasers from Coherent Inc. deliver high power in a compact package. The Sapphire 488 LP offers 150 mW of continuous-wave output at 488 nm, while the Sapphire 561 LP provides 200 mW at 561 nm. Available in an OEM and in a Center for Devices and Radiological Health-compliant configuration, the lasers measure 125 × 70 × 34 mm, facilitating integration into benchtop instrumentation.
Integration is further aided by the high efficiency of the optically pumped semiconductor laser technology used in the Sapphire LP series, which produces minimal waste heat. Also, a USB port interface (OEM version only; besides the analog and RS-232 ports previously available) enables simple software control of laser operation and readout of all operating and status parameters. A new OEM controller board, available for all Sapphire LP products, is approximately half the size of the prior version.

The cost-effective lasers are targeted primarily at life sciences applications, such as flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, and sequencing in genomics and proteomics. In these uses, their small size and high output power enable construction of compact instrumentation. They deliver beam quality of M²<1.1, low noise of <0.25% rms from 20 Hz to 2 MHz and high pointing stability of <30 µrad, resulting in stable operation.
