Laser Power Sensors
The PowerMax USB/RS laser power sensors from Coherent Inc. use state-of-the-art microelectronics miniaturization techniques and integrate an entire instrument within a USB 2.0 or RS-232 cable connector. They have all the signal processing and power measurement electronics normally contained in a LabMax meter, and they connect directly to a PC with plug-and-play functionality. Suited for low- and high-volume embedded sensor applications, they eliminate the need for a separate stand-alone meter box, thus delivering significant savings in cost and space, with no reduction in performance.

The plug-and-play applications software provides a virtual instrument interface that enables the operator to take laser power readings, log data and compute measurement statistics. Users also can write their own software using host interface commands that control all aspects of power meter operation. The software features trending, tuning, histogram, statistics (mean, minimum, maximum, standard deviation) and log-batch-to-file. It can operate multiple devices simultaneously, and it performs synchronized ratiometry.

The product line includes a variety of thermopile sensors, as well as one semiconductor photodiode-based detector. Together, these sensors enable accurate laser power measurements from the deep-ultraviolet to the infrared (190 nm to 11 µm), over a power range extending from microwatts to kilowatts.

These new PowerMax products will benefit a variety of users, including OEMs who want to embed power measurement electronics within their own instrumentation, field service engineers who already carry a laptop computer, and operators of computer-controlled laser burn-in racks and long-term reliability test benches. In addition, the sensors are useful for general laboratory applications in which experimental data acquisition is performed from a central PC.

Both models’ instrumentation platforms are compatible with thermopiles and optical sensors and can be adapted to most of the company’s power sensors. They display the beam position with position-sensing quadrant thermopiles, and their high-resolution 24-bit analog-to-digital converter supports four digits of resolution and measurement accuracy equivalent to that found in the proprietary LabMax meters. Spectral compensation is unique to each device for improved accuracy, and all measurements are NIST-traceable.

For systems integrators and for implementations involving customer-written software, the sensors incorporate a comprehensive command set that is easy to access. The dynamic link library driver supports simple ASCII host commands for remote interfacing, and National Instruments’ LabView drivers are supplied for easy LabView integration.
