LCDs equipped with LED backlighting systems instead of conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamps are offered by Kyocera Corp. The lead- and mercury-free displays have applications in medical systems and test and measurement equipment. They are available in thin-film transistor and super twisted and color super twisted nematic models in 4.7- and 5.7-in. diagonal modules. With an inverter-free design, they operate at 3, 5 and 12 VDC, with little or no need for electromagnetic interference suppression. They offer improved shock and vibration resistance (no glass tube), faster start-up in low-temperature environments and luminance control in response to current.
