RATINGEN, Germany, July 12, 2010 — Mitsubishi Electric Europe BV is introducing a 638-nm red laser diode. The ML520G72 offers high output power and is suited to pico projector applications or other portable display systems requiring a red light source with high brightness. Its 500-mW output power achieves a luminous flux of up to 60 lm as opposed to the 10 lm offered by LED-based projectors, according to the company.

Conversion efficiency from electrical to optical power is 32% at 500 mW and at a case temperature of 25 °C. This helps to reduce power consumption and therefore to extend the battery lifetime.

Over the temperature range of -5 to 40 °C, the laser diode can produce up to 500 mW of continuous-wave power, and it can provide pulsed laser light of 600 mW at 50 °C when operating with a maximum duty cycle of 25% at frequencies of at least 50 Hz.

For continuous-wave operation at 25 oC, the threshold current is 170 mA. The operating current at 500 mW/2.3 V is 680 mA. The red laser diode is integrated into a standard 5.6-mm CAN package.
