A highly doped erbium double-clad large-mode-area fiber for applications in the 1.5- through 1.6-μm wavelength range has been introduced by Liekki Corp. Suitable for medical imaging and eye-safe fiber lasers and amplifiers, the Er60-20/125DC fiber has a high erbium concentration for efficient absorption, a 20-μm core with a numerical aperture of 0.07, and 125-μm octagonal-shaped cladding. The fiber demonstrates >30% slope efficiency with 980-nm pumping and with laser bandwidth extending up to 1.6 μm. Demonstrating the capabilities of the direct nanoparticle deposition technology, it features a large core/clad ratio, low clustering and low background losses. It can be pumped with either 980- or 1480-nm lasers.
