50-mW solid-state laser

Coherent Inc. has added a 50-mW, 488-nm, continuous-wave model to its Sapphire line of solid-state lasers. The laser is suitable for flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, genetic screening and drug discovery applications. The device creates a beam diameter of 0.70 ±0.05 mm with a pointing stability of <30 μrad over ±3 °C. The static beam position tolerance is <250 μm in X and Y, and the beam divergence is <1.2 mrad. It offers a noise level of <0.25% rms at 20 Hz to 2 MHz and <1% peak to peak at 20 Hz to 20 kHz. It shares the same form factor as other Sapphire models, which enables users of lower-power versions to increase performance without redesigning their existing system.
