Laboratory technicians find the Spectroline portable E-Series UV lamps from Spectronics Corp. convenient for performing inexpensive gradient sampling. These small, lightweight lamps can easily be carried to wherever they are needed, saving laboratory personnel trips to the darkroom, for example, to use a UV transilluminator. The lamps make the faint DNA bands much more visible and are essential when isolating the DNA bands on a CsCl solution. Many researchers use ethidium bromide staining to monitor the progress of gradient separation of the DNA bands from agarose gel slices. E-Series lamps ensure a higher sensitivity of detection during such separation, without damaging the ethidium bromide-stained DNA. They are available in 30 different models, so technicians can select the best combination of UV wavelength, intensity, lamp size and wattage for their specific applications.
