LINCOLN, Neb., Oct. 8, 2010 — The IRDye 800CW HA optical probe for in vivo imaging is the latest addition to the BrightSite optical agent family from Li-Cor Biosciences. Hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid, or HA) is an extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycan formed from disaccharide units containing N-acetylglucosamine and glucuronic acid.

The agent is useful for researchers looking to specifically target the lymphatic system, or tumor cells that overexpress CD44 receptors. Hyaluronan interacts with several cell surface receptors, namely CD44, RHAMM (receptor for hyaluronan mediated motility; CD168), LYVE-1 (lymphatic vessel endothelial HA receptor-1), HARE (hyaluronan receptor for endocytosis), layilin and Toll-4.

It binds to proteoglycans in cartilage and other tissues and plays an important structural role in the organization of the extracellular matrix. It is catabolized by receptor-mediated endocytosis and lysosomal degradation after transport via the lymph-to-lymph nodes.

The company offers a complete line of BrightSite optical agents for use on its Pearl Impulse small-animal imaging system and other systems that use near-infrared detection methods. Additional agents in the series include: the 2-DG, EGF, RGD and BoneTag optical probes, and the PEG contrast agent.
