Riegl Laser Measurement Systems GmbH has announced an addition to its V-line airborne laser fleet of instruments, the VQ-580. It provides high-speed, noncontact data acquisition using a narrow near-IR laser beam and a fast line-scanning mechanism, and it is designed to measure on snow and ice. High-accuracy laser ranging is based on proprietary echo digitization and online waveform processing, enabling precise measurements, even under adverse atmospheric conditions, and the evaluation of multiple target echoes. Applications include glacier, snow-field, agriculture, forestry, lakeside, riverbank and corridor mapping; topography and mining; city modeling; and mapping of power lines. The scanning mechanism is based on a fast rotating multifacet polygonal mirror that provides fully linear, unidirectional and parallel scan lines.
