For reliable use in data communication links, Fiberguide Industries Inc. offers its AGI series graded-index silica-core/silica-clad optical fibers, available with gold, polyimide and aluminum coatings. They offer the high bandwidth of single-mode fibers with the convenient termination of step-index multimode types. The result is a fiber with good bandwidth that can be used with lower-cost LEDs, making it a popular choice for medium-distance data communication links such as local area networks. Premium coatings provide reliable performance in extreme temperature conditions: polyimide (—190 to 350 °C), aluminum (—269 to 400 °C) and gold (—269 to 700 °C). Fibers also are available in a variety of sizes to fit customer requirements. Applications include shipboard, fiber-distributed data interfaces and 850-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.
