SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 26, 2011 — The IR OSLON SFH 4715S from Osram Opto Semiconductors produces >1 W of optical power and measures 3.75 × 3.75 mm. It enables development of compact illumination units for CMOS and CCD cameras. The LED features proprietary nanostack chip technology and a temperature-stable OSLON Black Series package.
It typically provides 1070 mW of optical power at a 1-A operating current and features typical thermal resistance of 6.5 kW. An integrated outcoupling lens with a ±45° emission angle delivers 15% more output power than components without the lens, the company says. At a wavelength of 850 nm, the LED is well matched to the sensitivity range of CMOS and CCD camera sensors. The miniaturized package permits compact arrangements that enable a high power density that is beneficial for 3-D cameras. The infrared LED can be modulated up to high operating currents of 5 A in the 10-MHz range.
The stacked chips have two p-n junctions connected in series and generate nearly twice the optical power of conventional emitters. The OSLON Black Series package is based on a metal lead frame, and its thermal expansion exactly matches the thermal behavior of circuit boards, achieving good cycle stability, even at the heavily fluctuating temperatures that may occur outdoors. The LED complies with the highest quality standards, including the automotive standard AEC-Q101. Operating lifetime is up to 50,000 h.
The device addresses requirements of the security industry. Applications range from spotlights for IR cameras and CCTV systems via machine vision solutions to license plate number recognition.
