OLCHING, Germany, Oct. 31, 2011 — Laser Components GmbH has designed a variable beamsplitter with a position-dependent reflection profile. By moving the beamsplitter, the user can obtain a reflection value between ±5%, depending upon the position. The values can be continuously adjusted.

The coating is produced using an ion-assisted deposition process that reduces drift. Because of the active adjustment, the laser beam can be precisely split, without any absorption losses.

High-power beamsplitters are used to split a laser beam into two partial beams. Conventional production of such a dielectric layer has a tolerance of ±3% or higher. With its proprietary ion beam sputtered coating, the tolerance is reduced to ±1%, according to the company.
