NEWARK, Del., Nov. 7, 2011 — B&W Tek Inc. has launched the NanoRam, a handheld instrument for materials identification and verification within current good manufacturing practices-compliant facilities. It is a state-of-the-art compact Raman spectrometer and integrated computing system based on an open systems architecture design that can support a variety of applications in multiple industries. Designed for nonspecialists, it is easy to use and operates singlehandedly.

The device enables pharmaceutical customers to deploy instruments in volume among different sites and to efficiently analyze active pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients and drug products as part of a manufacturing and quality process. It allows rapid development of standardized and validated methods to facilitate 100% inspection for purity and quality, as mandated by government regulators within operational guidelines provided by US and international pharmacopeia.

With the advantages of portable Raman spectroscopy, such as ease of sampling, on-the-spot analysis with no need for quarantine areas, highly selective peaks for qualitative and quantitative analysis, and the ability to analyze organic and inorganic compounds over a wide spectral range, the NanoRam reduces production costs and escalates productivity. Using US Pharmacopeia-certified samples, Raman spectral libraries are available for pharmaceutical materials, and new spectra easily can be generated and added to existing libraries. Raman spectral libraries that have been created on other instruments can be transferred to the NanoRam platform using a library conversion utility.

Proprietary and patented CleanLaze technology provides good laser stabilization and a narrow linewidth. Other features include spectral resolution below 10 cm−1, wide Raman shift coverage up to 3200 cm−1 and a thermoelectrically cooled 2048-pixel CCD array.

Weighing <1.1 kg, the instrument’s large organic LED display and low power consumption provide high-quality Raman measurements. The unit is supplied with a range of sampling accessories for gels, liquids, powders and solids.
