BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 2, 2011 — ASD Inc. has released the FieldSpec 4 line of portable full-range spectroradiometers designed for fast, precise spectral data collection.

The instruments operate from 350 to 2500 nm and allow researchers to cover more ground faster and obtain high-quality data. The company says that, thanks to improvements in the short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) region, users can cover twice the area in half the time.

For applications requiring high precision, the new spectroradiometer configuration provides good signal-to-noise performance, resulting in precise spectral data with no increase in measurement time.

Researchers who are looking at materials with features at the longer wavelengths will benefit from the improved performance in the SWIR region.

The line consists of three models. The FieldSpec 4 Standard-Res is a remote-sensing spectroradiometer suitable for hyperspectral image interpretation and validation. The FieldSpec 4 Hi-Res is well-suited to geologic and other applications that require definition of narrow spectral features, especially in the longer wavelengths. The FieldSpec 4 Wide-Res model is for multispectral and other areas of research involving materials with broad spectral features, such as plant physiology.

Features include a rugged fiber optic cable option, a small and lightweight instrument case, a soft-sided backpack travel cover that eases portability, and an expanded wireless range that helps users capture spectra farther from the instrument controller.

Performing reflectance measurements in support of remote sensing studies requires waiting for the best solar conditions, which often limits the time available to make quality measurements. The FieldSpec 4 increases researchers’ ability to move quickly from site to site and to make more measurements, while improving the quality of the spectra captured in the field.
