SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 14, 2011 — Coherent Inc. has introduced the MetaBeam 1000, a turnkey laser-based machining tool that enables cost-effective cutting of sheet metal, including stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum and brass.
It uses the company’s Diamond E1000 1000-W CO2 laser, a completely sealed-off kilowatt laser that has a peak power >2500 W and an M2 value of <1.2. It is maintenance-free over its lifetime. The company says that the MetaBeam offers lower acquisition and operational costs when compared to legacy systems based on fast-flow CO2 lasers. The long-wavelength infrared CO2 laser output and added power enable the system to cut a variety of metals as well as organic materials such as wood and plastic.
The laser machining tool is available with either a 1.27 × 1.27-m or a 1.27 × 2.54-m cutting table, and produces cutting accuracy of ±25 μm over its entire range. The system includes a capacitive height sensor to maintain constant spacing between the cutting nozzle and metal surface, and it is supplied standard with autofocus to deliver consistent clean cuts.
It includes two independent high-pressure gas supplies to rapidly switch between assist gases, enabling cutting of a variety of materials with minimal setup time. Various automation enhancement tools, such as pallet shuttles, are available to facilitate integration into a production environment and to increase productivity.
The MetaBeam 1000 processes metals and other materials for job shops, metal service centers and sheet metal fabrication shops. Its ease of use and automation capabilities make it suitable for in-house sheet metal cutting for manufacturers in industries including appliances, automobiles, aerospace and contract manufacturing.
