MELBOURNE, Fla., Dec. 30, 2011 — Elk Industries LLC has announced a rugged and robust variable-power OEM/laboratory deep-violet continuous-wave laser diode operating at 401 nm with output power of 400 to 500 mW. It operates on 2-W power input at 100 and 240 VAC, 50 to 60 Hz, and on laser diode input of 393 mA at 5 VDC, for full output power.

The highly collimated output appears as TEM00 with a focal point of ≤500 μm. Additional collimation allows for transmission at distances of >1 km.

The laser enables new research in fluorescence lifetime studies, materials research, direct-diode laser pumping of dye liquid lasers, laser ablation spectroscopy, laser marking and engraving, micromachining of organic materials, forensic studies, near-UV laser illumination, laser light shows, laser projection systems and displays, and counterfeit detection.

The laser module measures ~4 × 6 × 5 in. The diode is housed in a standard TO-18, 5.6-mm can.
