The PQRNG 150 from PicoQuant GmbH generates provable randomness at high bit rates. The fast photonic quantum random number generator delivers a bit rate of up to 150 Mb/s, delivered over USB, and long-term statistical data quality. It is based on measuring the arrival times of single photons, governed by the inherent indeterminism of quantum physics. Randomness is an important resource in many areas of science and technology, including Monte Carlo simulations and secure data encryption methods. Although randomness generated by a computer algorithm is predictable, quantum physics provides true randomness and unpredictability rooted in the laws of nature. The new number generator provides access to this source of randomness at high speed by exploiting advanced photon timing instrumentation and data processing in hardware.
