RICHMOND, British Columbia, Canada, Jan. 17, 2012 — Point Grey Research Inc. has announced the addition of 2.8-megapixel models to its Grasshopper Express IEEE 1394b (FireWire-b) digital camera series.

The Grasshopper Express GX-FW-28S5 camera models are based on color and monochrome versions of the fast and highly sensitive Sony ICX674, a two-thirds-in. CCD featuring 4.54-μm square pixels that produces 1932 × 1452-pixel-resolution images at 26 fps. The sensor supports high-definition 1080p30 imaging and uses Sony’s EXview HAD CCD II technology to improve quantum efficiency, reduce smear and increase sensitivity into the near-infrared.

Every Grasshopper Express camera is equipped with a 32-MB frame buffer, a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter, and onboard temperature and power sensors to monitor camera status. Also included is the FlyCapture software development kit, a full software library that provides a common control interface for all of the company’s cameras under both Windows and Linux.

The 800-Mb/s FireWire-b interface allows fast image transfer and is well-suited to building low latency, highly deterministic multiple camera networks. The new cameras’ high-quality imaging makes them suitable for use in biophotonics, medical, astronomy, traffic surveillance, factory automation and machine vision applications.

The Grasshopper Express GX-FW-28S5M-C is monochrome, and the GX-FW-28S5C-C is the color model.
