Wyatt Technology Corp. has launched a refractive index detector for use with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatograph (UHPLC) systems using columns packed with small beads.

The Optilab UT-rEX, the first refractive index detector for UHPLC applications, uses a combination of miniaturized components and semiconductor photodiode technology as well as proprietary computer algorithms to provide linearity over a wide range and sensitivity to samples that are not ultraviolet active.

The instrument provides dead volume of <1.5 µl compared with 10 to 20 µl for other refractive index detectors, offering uncompromised resolution and full sensitivity over the entire range. The small flow cell and proprietary temperature regulation enable stable refractive index baselines and resonance ionization spectroscopy signals.

The detector can be operated below or above ambient temperatures, with temperature control programmable between 4 °C and 50 °C.
