The LSM 5 Pascal laser scanning microscope from Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH can provide images with 2048 x 2048-pixel resolution in up to 4096 gray levels. The basic configuration for materials research and industrial applications includes a HeNe laser and a confocal recording channel with an integrated neutral beamsplitter. Using the confocal technology and point scan method, the device can image slices and perform 3-D reconstruction of specimens. A second fluorescence channel can be retrofitted, and up to eight emission filters per channel can be changed by the user.
