PowerPhotonic Ltd. has launched LightForge, a free-form micro-optics fabrication service that allows optical designers to create custom optical surfaces.

Designers can upload their design to the PowerPhotonic web portal from industry-standard optical design packages such as Zemax. The design is then compared with the LightForge guidelines to ensure compliance, and a physical layout is generated for verification by the designer. After the sign-off and ordering procedure, the part goes into manufacturing.

The service can be used to create refractive optical elements ranging from generic beam transformers and microlens arrays to diode laser smile correctors and wavefront compensator phase plates to custom surface shapes. Options include a broadband antireflection coating and deployment via industry-standard 2-in. lens mounts. The service can be used for rapid prototyping as a precursor to volume production or for one-use designs.
