WIESTHAL, Germany, June 10, 2013 — Phoenix, an optical noncontact 3-D sensor from Wenzel Group GmbH & Co. KG, captures point clouds and geometry elements in one working cycle. Based on light projection and image processing, it provides precise results, high speeds and ease of use, making it suitable for quality assurance, and serial monitoring and analysis.

The lightweight device recognizes different textured surfaces, diagnoses defects such as scratches, and collects bar codes for process control. It is relatively insensitive to extraneous light, delivers reliable results almost independent of lighting conditions, and enables the detection and measurement of mixed materials such as carbon fiber-reinforced plastics combined with aluminum and sheet metal.

Data is recorded within 1 s, producing up to 350,000 points per shot. The instrument is adaptable to the PH10 motorized indexing head and the PHS servo positioning head from Renishaw and can be replaced automatically by the ACR1, ACR2 and ACR3 probe changers.

Applications include the automotive, plastics and sheet metal processing industries.
