Edmund Optics has released Plano-Concave (PCV) Axicons, specialized conical prisms featuring one concave conical surface and one plano surface, which are suitable for measurement and alignment, research, and medical and life sciences applications that require a ring-shaped laser output.

In laser materials processing, the PCV Axicons generate a ring-shaped image along the optical axis and create a nondiffractive approximation of a Bessel beam. When the PCV Axicons are used with Plano-Convex Axicons, the diameter of the Bessel beam can be controlled by the separation between them, a process suitable for ablating corneal material in surgical procedures.

The PCV Axicons are available in 12 different 25.4-mm diameter models. Apex angles of 90°, 130°, 140°, 160°, 170° and 175° are offered with either a VIS 0° coating or a NIR I coating.
