SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 30, 2013 — The OV8865 8-megapixel CameraChip sensor from OmniVision Technologies Inc. features an improved 1.4-µm OmniBSI-2 pixel suitable for mobile device cameras, smartphones and tablets.

Performance improvements over the previous generation OV8835 sensor include a 50% reduction in dark current and a 5% improvement in dynamic range, resulting in improved high- and low-light image capture. The new model also consumes less power and achieves the sub-200-mW benchmark.

The 1/3.2-in. device supports an active array of 3264 × 2448 pixels operating at 30 fps for high-speed photography. It can capture 1080p high-definition (HD) video at 30 fps or 720p HD video at 60 fps with electronic image stabilization, at 100% horizontal field of view. The device’s 2 × 2 binning functionality with post-binning resampling filter minimizes spatial artifacts and removes image artifacts around sharp edges to deliver clean, crisp color images.

Samples are now available; volume production will begin in the fourth quarter 2013.
