Andor Technology plc has launched the Zyla 4.2 scientific CMOS camera for research and OEM applications such as ion signaling microscopy, superresolution microscopy and light-sheet microscopy, and total internal reflection fluorescence.

With a rate of 100 fps, the 4.2-megapixel camera delivers 72% quantum efficiency, <1 e− read noise and a 33,000:1 dynamic range in a compact, low-vibration design. It also provides comprehensive on-head field-programmable gate array real-time data processing.

It can be thermoelectrically cooled to 0 °C and uses a low-noise fan, rendering it suitable for vibration-sensitive setups. Incorporating proprietary dark-noise suppression technology, it yields a dark current of 0.14 e− per pixel per second. The camera is available in a −10 °C water-cooled variant.

The company says that, although scientific CMOS cameras do not possess the raw sensitivity of higher-end EMCCD cameras for extreme low-light applications, such as single-molecule detection, they do outperform interline CCDs across several key parameters, and they are also good for live-cell imaging.
