BAD WILDBAD, Germany — Multilabel ReaderThe TriStar2 S LB 942 multilabel reader from Berthold Technologies GmbH & Co. KG now supports time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer (TR-FRET) and homogenous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF) assays.

The upgrade follows the recent introduction of monochromator technology for absorbance and fluorescence excitation. FRET technology is used to monitor specific molecular interactions with high sensitivity in homogeneous phase. The effect relies on the distance-dependent transfer of excitation energy from a donor dye to an acceptor.

The availability of TR-FRET technology for TriStar2 S enhances the sensitivity of FRET studies. TR-FRET can be applied to FRET assays featuring an acceptor dye with long-lived fluorescence decays. After excitation of the donor with a short light pulse, the acceptor emission is only recorded after a tunable time delay of 50 to 300 μs. The acceptor emission is recorded and potential background emission is suppressed.
