Short-Pulse Laser Diode

WILSONVILLE, Ore., April 29, 2015 — Flir Systems VPowrFlir Systems Inc. has announced a high-power, short-pulse laser diode with electronics designed for applications including lidar, gesture recognition and 3-D sensing.

The VPowr laser source is based on the company’s proprietary vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology. VCSELs are brighter and more efficient than traditional LED-based systems and provide improved eye safety. They also offer superior illumination in terms of uniformity and speckle noise over commonly used edge-emitting lasers.

Capable of more than 50-W peak power from 10- to 50-ns pulses out of a single aperture, the diode operates at an emission wavelength of 940 nm.

The device is available on a fully integrated, compact driver circuit board for easy interface and operation. A bare chip on a submount is also an option for customers conducting their own on-board integration.

VPowr is an ITAR-restricted product, but custom chip development is available to approved parties.
