Femtosecond LaserThe Monaco femtosecond laser from Coherent Inc. is a closed, one-box system that combines a 1035-nm solid-state oscillator with an amplifier.

The device yields a 40-μJ pulse energy at a repetition rate of 1 MHz in pulsewidths of <400 fs. It can be operated in single-shot mode up to its full repetition rate and adjusted to produce pulsewidths of >10 ps. Highly accelerated life test protocols are used to optimize the laser, with highly accelerated stress screenings to ensure reliability.

Applications include the precision processing of metal, semiconductors and organic materials, as well as high-speed cutting of plastic and polymer thin films, silicon wafer scribing, and strengthened glass cutting. The device can also be used for micromachining inhomogenous, composite substrates for microelectronics fabrication and applications in ophthalmology such as lasik flap cutting and cataract procedures.
