MERCERVILLE, N.J. — Princeton Optronics Inc. has announced the high-volume mass production of single emitters and small arrays for optical proximity sensors.

Because of their small form factor, high directionality and electrical-optical conversion efficiency, the vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) can replace IR LEDs in any active optical sensor.

Single emitters can reach output powers from several milliwatts to several watts in CW mode and order of magnitude in pulsed mode while maintaining industry efficiencies. Single emitters and arrays are offered in die sizes from 190 × 190 to 500 × 500 μm, as well as 850 and 940 nm.
