IsoDyn™ – Coating Complex ShapesDSI developed IsoDyn™ coating technology to overcome the limitations of traditional methods in producing uniform coatings on highly curved parts, or components with complex three dimensional shapes. The unique IsoDyn process enables volume production of uniform, multi-layer, high performance, high laser damage threshold coatings on any shaped part. This includes full spherical ball lenses, hemispherical domes, cylindrical rods, faceted shapes, and even the inner surface of tubes.

Other coating methods, such as evaporation and sputtering, all occur under relatively high vacuum, and coating material deposition occurs only on surfaces which are in direct line of sight with the material source. Furthermore, the deposition rate is highly dependent upon part distance from the source, as well angular orientation. This makes it quite challenging to produce uniform coatings on highly curved surfaces.

To solve this problem, DSI developed a form of low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) called IsoDyn. LPCVD is a well-established technology in the semiconductor processing field, where it is used to produce thin films during integrated circuit production, but had not been used before in the manufacture of optical thin films.

In IsoDyn, the chamber is filled with a chemical vapor. Heating causes a chemical reaction, resulting in uniform material deposition on all exposed surfaces of the substrate, regardless of position or orientation within the chamber.

IsoDyn also avoids the need for traditional tooling to hold the part during coating, eliminating the requirement to coat the front and back surfaces of a part separately. Plus it allows the chamber to be filled with a large number of parts. All of this translates directly into higher throughput and lower production cost, making it attractive for medical, imaging, laser, aerospace and military applications.
