Sumita Optical Glass Inc. is offering the Image Scope, which can convert UV light to visible light by applying the principle of fluorescence glass. It comprises 20,000 10-µm fibers that are 1 m in length, aspherical objective lenses, an adjustable finder and detachable UV-passing, visible-absorbing filters. Although it is intended to produce green visible light, the device also can produce red and blue light. Applications include detection of UV light, combustion testing of automobile engines and UV cosmetics development. Additionally, the scope can be used to research the eyesight of insects, which is believed to be functional under UV light.
