Uses Kyma (Wave) Technology
Carlsbad, Calif., June 9 -- Melles Griot, a supplier of lasers and photonics components, has introduced a new solid-state laser platform based on its Kyma (Greek for wave) technology.

The company said solid-state lasers built with Kyma technology require fewer individual parts than those associated with conventional diode-pumped soli-state (DPSS) lasers, increasing output stability and performance, potentially increasing operating life and decreasing manufacturing cost. The technology supports laser output wavelengths from the deep blue to the red. The first product in the series, the Kyma 488, will be introduced next week at Laser Munich.

The Kyma 488 will be available with 10 and 20 mW of output power at 488.0 nm, a critical wavelength for many biomedical and life science applications. The output beam is nearly circular (less than 1.1:1 aspect ratio), is linearly polarized and has an M2 factor of less than 1.2. The compact, conduction-cooled laser head incorporates thermoelectric cooling and automatic power control for stable, long-term operation and excellent beam-pointing stability. Long-term power drift is less than 5 percent over 24 hours. The modular design is extremely efficient and consumes less than 15 W of wall power, the comany said said.

"Introduction of the Kyma platform demonstrates our continued leadership and commitment to DPSS lasers for OEM applications," said Emery Skarupa, general manager of the Melles Griot Laser Group. "The combination of improved optical performance, increased electrical efficiency and lower volume cost easily meets the demands of today's and tomorrow's critical applications."

Melles Griot, a Barloworld Scientific company, is a leading global supplier of photonics products including optical components and systems, lasers, motion-control systems, laser measurement instrumentation, optomechanical hardware and vibration-isolated optical tables and workstations. The company has manufacturing and distribution activities in 41 countries, serving industries as diverse as semiconductor, biotechnology, metrology, and research.
