6,000 km/h - Fracture Observation on Smartphone
Shimadzu Europa GmbHRequest Info
Glass is traditionally used in a variety of industries, including windows, lenses and tableware. Among these glasses, chemically tempered glass produced by the ion exchange process is used for the cover glass of smartphones. Since the surface of tempered glass is strengthened by compressive stress, the force leading to breakage can be greater than that of untempered glass. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that the breakage of the entire glass may occur immediately, starting from a small scratch caused by an external impact. For this reason, research has been carried out to achieve even greater strength and impact resistance.
In this study, the glass was punctured at a test speed of 10 m/s with a 20 mm diameter striker. The recording speed of the HPV-X2 high-speed video camera was set at 2 million frames per second. While the HPV-X2 is capable of capturing images at up to 10 million frames per second, allowing detailed fracture observation on various glasses, the high-speed testing machine can reach a speed of up to 20 m/sec.
The results of the fracture observation made it clear that tempering the glass increases the crack growth rate as well as the number of cracks. It was confirmed that the use of HITS-PX and HPV-X2 is effective for the evaluation of toughened glass. Download the application note here and watch the video here.
