OmniVision Technologies Inc. has announced the OV8820, a raw CMOS image sensor that performs 8-megapixel image capture. It delivers 1080-pixel/30-fps and 720-pixel/60-fps high-definition video that supports mobile YouTube and Facebook applications, allowing smart phone users to keep informed about tomorrow’s videocentric capabilities.

Features include electronic image stabilization and full horizontal field of view to meet the demands of rapidly growing smart phone markets.

The 1/3.2-in. sensor is based on proprietary 1.4-µm OmniBSI pixel architecture and delivers high-quality, fast frame rate image capture and high-definition video recording in a compact format to meet the requirements for next-generation mobile handsets and smart phones.

In full 8-megapixel (3264 × 2448) resolution, the OV8820 operates at 24 fps in a 4:3 format and, in 6-megapixel (3264 × 1836), at 30 fps in a 16:9 format. These higher frame rates enable benefits including no image lag for shutterless designs, continuous shooting, minimized rolling shutter effect and real-time image capture with no lag between resolutions. A high-speed, four-lane mobile industry processor interface facilitates the required high data transfer rate.

An integrated scaler enables electronic image stabilization and maintains full field of view with improved signal-to-noise performance in 1080-pixel high-definition video mode operating at 30 fps. The 2 × 2 binning function with a postbinning resampling filter function minimizes spatial artifacts and removes image artifacts around edges to deliver clean, crisp color images.

The OmniBSI backside illumination pixel architecture delivers good low-light sensitivity, improves quantum efficiency, and reduces crosstalk and low photo response nonuniformity, which all contribute toward improved image quality and overall camera performance.

The low-power raw sensor is designed for two-chip solutions that involve the sensor working in conjunction with a baseband or an application processor with integrated image signal processing. It has an on-chip voice coil motor driver and fast mode switching between different resolutions. Other integrated features include temperature sensing, 256 B of one-time programmable memory, lens shading correction and defect pixel correction. The module measures 8.5 × 8.5 mm.
