PRINCETON, N.J., June 6, 2012 — Princeton Optronics Inc. announces the availability of 800- and near-800-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays with 100 mW to >10 W of peak output power.

They are designed for use in consumer electronics applications such as gesture recognition, natural user interface and 3-D content creation where near-infrared illumination is needed. In 3-D image sensing, the VCSEL arrays provide low speckle, subnanosecond rise and fall times, and electrical-to-optical conversion of >45% efficiency. Suitable for time-of-flight or structured light applications, they are preferred over LEDs and edge-emitting lasers because of their high efficiency, narrow and circular emission angle, short rise and fall times, and flattop intensity profile.

They operate at temperatures up to 80 °C. The chips can be packaged in a variety of configurations for high-volume applications. They do not require a hermetically sealed housing, which reduces packaging costs. Chip sizes range from 0.5 × 0.5 mm to 3 × 3 mm, depending upon output power.

Optics can be added to the package to create greater options for beam handling in the customer’s illumination system, and additional wavelengths can be fabricated upon request.
