Bern Optics Inc. has announced the availability of submillimeter achromatic lenses with 0.20-mm diameters for use in precision medical and analytical devices.

The most common type of achromat is the doublet, a compound lens consisting of two elements cemented together. These precision microminiature optical components – some as small as a grain of salt – can be custom-engineered, ground and polished to micron tolerances. They are suitable for use in applications including endoscopes and other medical devices.

Besides careful control of the grinding and polishing of the complex lenses, the company’s quality control regimen verifies the centration of each element before and after cementing. The lenses can be produced with or without specialized coatings to meet the specific application requirements.
