OAK RIDGE, N.J., Nov. 2, 2015 — Acylinder LensesEsco Optics Inc. offers aspheric cylindrical (or acylinder) lenses in various materials with cylinder lengths upwards of 200 mm.

These products are offered as a new line of custom optics, and Esco is quoting both prototype and production quantities.

The typical configuration of an acylinder is planoconvex. The nonplano surface is polished using aspheric coefficients in relation to a best-fit cylinder radius, reducing spherical aberration in one dimension. Planoconcave acylinders are also possible but not as common.

Acylindrical lenses can be manufactured using high-index materials to reduce chromatic aberration. They are polished to produce a root-mean-square wavefront error <0.5 μm and surface quality of 10-5 depending on the material.

Applications include collimation of laser diode fast axes and creating a thin line profile when using a monochromatic light source.
