New Modulator, Switching and Attenuation
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 6, 2006 -- JDSU is introducing three new optical communications products that expand its agile optical network (AON) line, including new modulator, switching and attenuation technology, at OFC/NFOEC 2006, being held this week in Anaheim.
JDSU said its AON strategy, which it launched in February, addresses the need for more agile, dynamically reconfigurable network modules to support deployment of triple-play consumer and converged business services. The company is introducing two agile optical component products and a new member of its agile optical switch portfolio:
  • ES VOAs -- Electrostatic, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)-based variable optical attenuators, featuring low wavelength-dependent loss, small-form-factor packaging and high reliability.
  • 10 Gb/s dual-parallel and Mach-Zehnder (DPMZ and DDMZ), designed to enable more efficient wavelength transmission over longer distances across an AON. The DPMZ modulator is for use in long-haul and ultralong-haul optical transport applications using spectrally efficient modulation. The DDMZ was developed for long-reach and very-long-reach metro networks as well as long haul networks.
  • Modular optical protection switch (MPS) circuit pack that independently monitors and protects up to eight optical circuits. If optical power fades below user-defined thresholds on any of its circuits, the MPS autonomously switches to an alternate path within 15 ms, enhancing the reliable performance of the agile optical network. The MPS enables local and remote management access via TL1/SNMP or through an intuitive graphical user interface, and is readily integrated into the AON. It is currently being shipped to a tier-one global system manufacturer, JDSU said.
