Polatis Inc.’s Series 6000 all-optical switches are fully nonblocking single-mode matrix switches with up to 192 × 192 fiber ports and an average loss of <1 dB. Using proprietary DirectLight technology, the switches offer low loss, true transparency and dark fiber capability.

The company has improved the DirectLight technology to double the density of fiber ports in the optical switch core. The control electronics have been re-engineered with resilient carrier-class architecture and more power-efficient devices to ensure that the best reliability is achievable for this size of optical cross-connect.

System designers have had to choose between matrix size and optical switch loss. The series 6000 combines a high port count with low loss and rapid reconfiguration to provide the best fiber layer routing flexibility and optical performance.

As line data rates increase to 100 Gb/s and above, customers see benefits in adopting protocol and data-agnostic all-optical switching in preference to traditional, power-hungry optical-electrical-optical routers where backplane interconnect capacity is becoming a bottleneck. All-optical switches consume less power per port, have near-zero latency and are transparent to future data rate upgrades.

Compared with traditional 3-D microelectromechanical systems optical switch technologies, DirectLight uses piezoelectric actuation to steer the light directly between switch ports to obtain the best optical connection. Integrated position sensors on every fiber ensure patchcordlike transmission independent of the color, direction or power level of light on the fiber. DirectLight is robust against environmental effects and can pre-provision dark fiber paths and avoid concatenation of routing delays in optical mesh networks.

Applications include defense, test and measurement, data center interconnects, and high-definition video broadcast routing; and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers in telecom networks.
