The Alzheimer research kit from MP Biomedicals Inc. is a fluorescence-based assay kit for measuring amyloid-b uptake by macrophages, which occurs in healthy people but not in Alzheimer’s patients. As such, it is useful for basic research, drug screening and diagnosis for research purposes. Scientists using the kit will obtain fresh blood samples, isolate and culture macrophages, add the fluorescein-isothiocyanate-labeled amyloid-β provided in the kit, incubate it overnight and then employ their own microscopes to localize the fluorescently labeled amyloid-b inside or outside the macrophages. In addition to labeled amyloid-β, the kit includes balanced salt solution, phosphate-buffered saline, macrophage growth medium, fungizone (amphotericin B), formaldehyde, filamentous actin-identifying reagent, Lysotracker lysosome stain, an antiphotobleaching compound and an eight-well chamber slide.
