Ambient Light and Proximity SensorThe TCS3720 ambient light (ALS) and proximity sensor from ams-OSRAM GmbH provides accurate color and illuminance measurements and reliable proximity detection even when operating behind the high-speed, high-definition OLED screens in the latest smartphones.

The TCS3720 achieves >5× the sensitivity of the first-generation TCS3701, and 3× higher signal-to-noise ratio. The TCS3720 is supplied in a 3.34 × 1.36 × 0.6-mm 12-pin OLGA package. In typical implementations, the TCS3720 can reliably support a proximity sensing range of up to 5 cm, while providing color and illuminance measurements for granular optimization of the phone display’s brightness and color balance. It includes two advanced drivers for IR proximity sensing VCSELs; red, green, blue, and clear photodiode channels with built-in UV and IR blocking interference filters; and self-maximizing dynamic range.
