Product development firm Cambridge Consultants and brand protection company Ingenia Technology have developed a high-speed laser scanner for use in brand protection, product authentication and “track and trace” applications.

Ingenia’s laser-based technology — called Laser Surface Authentication (LSA) — is suited for use by brand owners, packaging companies and government agencies, said Martin Cooper, project manager at Cambridge Consultants.

The scanner typically is fitted above a production line and records a unique fingerprint based on the particular surface microstructure of each item it sees. The scanner can operate on fast production lines moving at up to 10 m per second and carrying up to 50 items per second.
