SPARTANBURG, S.C., Sept. 1, 2010 — Fujikura Ltd. is launching two new fiber optic fusion splicers, the FSM-100M and the FSM-100P, for splicing polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers. Both offer technologies to address the expanding splicing needs for factory, manufacturing, laboratory, and research and development applications.

The ArcMaster splicers are named for their ability to control the plasma zone of the fusion arc. They can be used to splice various types of specialty fibers, including large-diameter, low-contrast PM, and holey/microstructured.

The patented split v-groove clamping system accommodates optical fiber ranges from 60 to 2000 µm for cladding or coating without changing v-grooves or fiber clamps. Dual PM alignment technology called interrelation profile alignment (IPA) properly aligns and splices the PM fibers. The FSM-100P includes both traditional profile alignment system and the new IPA technologies. IPA also enables accurate crosstalk estimation for all PM fiber types.

Plasma zone fiber positioning provides versatility for splicing heat-sensitive and small-diameter fibers, and arc calibration technology facilitates transfer of high-end splicing applications from research and development to production by ensuring consistent performance and enables full exploitation of plasma zone capabilities.

Combining the best features of both cold and warm splice imaging, the new-generation splicers offer accurate splice loss estimation.

For splicing large-diameter fibers (LDFs) with a minimal core angle, the fiber holders are horizontally positioned relative to the v-grooves, minimizing higher-order modes in double-clad fibers. LDF splicing performance is also enhanced by the capability to mount the fiber holders in reverse orientation.

An increased travel range for sweep arc provides improved mode-field-diameter matching and the ability to reshape noncircular fibers in preparation for splicing.

The low-profile design eliminates fiber catch points. The dimensions of both splicers are consistent with the most popular production splicing workbenches.

Customers can upgrade firmware as new capabilities become available from the company. Upgrading is accomplished by connecting a USB cable to the splicer.

Applications for the splicers include telecommunications, fiber lasers, sensors and medical uses.
