Atom, Renishaw Inc.’s new noncontact optical linear and rotary incremental encoder, combines miniaturization with dirt immunity and signal stability for applications including laser scanning, precision microstages, semiconductors, medical, DDR (direct-drive rotor) motors, microscopy, scientific research, and space-critical motion control, inspection and metrology.

The 6.7 × 12.7 × 20.5-mm read head includes a setup LED to allow quick and easy installation and an autocalibration routine to enable faster optimization. The read head is available with either high-flex cable or flexible-printed circuit (FPC) output, in both 20- and 40-µm scale options.

The device offers analog speeds to 20 m/s (29,000 rpm on a 17-mm disk) and digital resolutions to 1 nm when used with the company’s interpolation electronics. A variety of scales are available, including industry-standard stainless steel tapes, linear glass spars and rotary glass disks from 17 to 108 mm in diameter.
