DELFT, Netherlands, May 11, 2009 – Kipp & Zonen BV has introduced the CNR 4 net radiometer that complies with the World Meteorological Organization’s “Good Quality” standard.
The device measures the energy balance between incoming short-wave and long-wave far-infrared radiation versus surface-reflected short-wave and outgoing long-wave radiation. It comprises a pair of pyranometers and a pair of pyrgeometers, with one set of each facing upward and one set facing downward. The pyranometer pair measures the short-wave radiation, and the pyrgeometer pair measures the long-wave. All four sensors are integrated directly into one instrument body, instead of having separate modules mounted onto a housing. Each sensor is calibrated individually for optimal accuracy.
The lightweight device has an integrated sun shield to reduce thermal effects on the measurements. The meniscus dome of the upper pyrgeometer ensures that water droplets roll off easily, and it improves the field of view to nearly 180°, compared with 150° for a flat window, resulting in better long-wave measurements. The optional CNF 4 ventilation unit provides efficient air flow over the domes and windows to reduce dirt, precipitation, dew and frost on the sensors.
Two temperature sensors are integrated for compatibility with every data logger. The cables have waterproof connectors, and the mounting rod can be unscrewed for transport.
Sensitivity is 5 to 20 µV/W/m2, response time is <18 s, nonlinearity is <1%, and operating temperature is from -40 to 80 °C.
Applications include meteorological, hydrological and agricultural scientific research.
