Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (Taos) Inc. has developed three reflective color sensors, each of which detects and reflects a primary color: The TRS1722 sensor emits red; the TRS1755, green; and the TRS1766, blue. Housed in a surface-mount package, their intended use is to simplify the addition of color-sensing capabilities in new-product designs. The devices combine a color LED die and a light-to-voltage converter with a corresponding color filter. The output voltage of the sensors is directly proportional to that of the reflected color. Because they respond to a single color, they are suitable for applications such as currency detection and validation, label edge detection, and color detection in paper, textiles and cosmetics. The LED drive current is as low as 250 µA, making the devices suitable for low-power and battery-operated applications.
