OsramOptoSemiconductor.jpgDesigned for mobile applications such as cell phones, PDAs, satellite navigation systems and superslim notebooks, the RGB MicroSideLED manufactured by Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH injects its light sideways into extremely thin lightguides. The compact package measures 5 × 1.4 × 0.6 mm and accommodates three colored chips (thin-film red and ThinGaN green and blue) that can be controlled individually and that together cover more than 100% of the NTSC color space. Depending on the white point, the luminous efficacy is between 35 and 40 lm/W. Mercury-free and RoHS-compliant, the device’s six-lead design provides efficient heat dissipation and enables the LEDs to be connected in series.
