SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 27, 2015 —
Coherent Inc. has announced its next generation of carbon monoxide (CO) lasers for enhanced materials processing.
The lasers output at 5 μm, providing strong absorption in certain plastic films, polymers and water, as well as dielectric materials and copper oxides used in printed circuit boards. Low absorption in chalcogenide fibers provides the potential for fiber delivery.
A smaller spot size enables the production of smaller holes and features, as well as narrower kerf widths when cutting. The first CO model, the J-3 5μm, outputs at more than 200 W, producing a high-quality beam with a propagation ratio (M2) of <1.2.
Applications range from glass cutting and drilling to fractional skin resurfacing.
