Microplate instrumentation manufacturer BioTek Instruments Inc. has added a patent-pending laser autofocus feature to its Cytation cell-imaging multimode readers. 

The autofocus design compiles all components into a single, user-installable cube that can be added to a new or existing system at any time, providing speed, reproducibility, and lowered risk of phototoxicity and photobleaching. The system enables the most appropriate autofocus method for the biology being studied. 

The readers combine multimode detection and microscopy with both image-based autofocus and a laser autofocus option, suiting a range of applications.
